Zelenchukskaya (Russian: Зеленчу́кская; Karachay-Balkar: Зеленчук, Zelençuk) is a rural locality (a stanitsa) and the administrative center of Zelenchuksky District of the Karachay–Cherkess Republic, Russia,[1] located on the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River. Population: 19,449 (2010 Russian census);[2] 21,025 (2002 Census);[3] 20,455 (1989 Soviet census).[4] In terms of population, it is the most populous rural locality in the republic.[2]
The Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Science is located to the south of the stanitsa.[5] In 2015, it detected signals that might have come from a possible advanced extraterrestrial civilization, which are now being investigated by SETI.[6]
