Unión Minera del Norte, S.A., also known by its acronym UMINSA, is Spain's leading company in the coal mining sector, with operations in the mining basins of León, Palencia and Asturias.[1] It is owned by the controversial businessman from León, Victorino Alonso,[2] and its registered office is in Madrid.[3] It has a production of more than 2,000,000 tons of coal per year and employs nearly 1,500 workers.[4]
