There are currently 16 departmental like territorial defense brigades stationed in 14 regions, as well as the capital and largest city of Nur-Sultan and Almaty.[1] The independent defense brigades are designed to perform tasks within the internal borders of the administrative regions, similarly to State defense forces or National Guard in the United States.[2]
During wartime situations, the territorial units have the potential to grow up to a size of over 60,000 military personnel.[3]
