He won a silver medal in the 200 metre backstroke and a bronze in the 100 metre backstroke at the 2012 Summer Olympics, along with a silver in the men's 4 × 100 m medley with the Japanese team.[3][4] His beautiful backstroke technique has often been compared to Roland Matthes, who was described as the Rolls-Royce of swimming.[5]
