Provideniya (Russian: Провиде́ния, IPA: [prəvʲɪˈdʲenʲɪjə]; Chukchi: Гуврэл Guvrel) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) and the administrative center of Providensky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia, located on Komsomolskaya Bay (a part of Providence Bay) in the northeastern part of the autonomous okrug, across the Bering Strait from Alaska, and very close to the International Date Line. The population has declined in recent decades: 1,970 (2010 Russian census);[3] 2,723 (2002 Census);[8] 5,432 (1989 Soviet census).[9]
