The version of the flag used before 2024 has come under growing criticism. Longstanding frustration with its illegibility[2] has been joined by concerns that the image depicted in the seal offered a negationist view of Minnesota's settlement by Europeans that concealed the violence committed against Indigenous peoples.[3][4] In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature created a commission to redesign the flag and seal of Minnesota.[5] On December 19, 2023, the commission selected a design that replaced the flag on May 11, 2024.
The original flag of Minnesota which simply featured a stylized seal on a background (white one side, blue other side) was adopted in 1893, in advance of the state's mounting an exhibition at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. It was significantly revised in 1957 (removing the white side and modifying the style of the seal) and received a minor color update in 1983.[6]
