Summary
DescriptionGeissler tubes at Spark Museum.jpg |
English: Geissler tubes from late 1800s displayed at the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention, Bellingham, Washington, USA. Invented by German glassblower and physicist Heinrich Geissler in 1857, Geissler tubes were the first gas discharge tubes and were made in many fanciful shapes for entertainment. When high voltage from an induction coil was applied between the metal electrodes at the ends of the tube, they lit up with many glowing colors. Around 1910 they evolved into the first neon lights. Photo altered using Gimp to remove reflection from glass front of display case. This resulted in the left and right side of image having slightly different color tones. |
