O termin elemento quimico fa referencia a una clase d'atomos, toz éls con o mesmo numero de protons en o suyo nuclio. Sindembargo, por tradición, se gosa decir elemento quimico a ixa substancia que puede descomponer-se, por medio d'una reacción quimica, en atras mas simplas.

Cal diferenciar un "elemento quimico" d'una substancia simpla. Asinas l'ozón (O3) y o dioxicheno (O2) son dos substancias simplas, cadaguna d'ellas con propiedaz diferents. Sindembargo, l'elemento quimico que forma istas dos substancias simplas ye l'oxicheno (O).
