Hello. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the term Sioux. See:. Therefore I took the liberty to make some alterations in this article. Sioux is an Ojibwe/French/Anglo corruption of the Oceti Sakowin, or 'People of the Seven Council Fires'. The Oceti Sakowin (or Sioux if you like) are usually divided into the Dakota (eastern Sioux), Nakota (middle Sioux) and Lakota (western Sioux). Most "Sioux" don't like to be called as such, by the way.
The Dakota were named Nadowessiweg by their traditional enemies, the Ojibwe Anishinaabeg (Chippewa). Nadowessiweg is a degoratory term meaning "small like adders /little snakes". The French corrupted this into Nadowessioux. The Anglo Americans, finally, shortened this to Sioux, and used it for the Dakota as well as for the Nakota and Lakota.
The Oceti Sakowin are divided into three geographic divisions and seven subdivisions (The Council Fires):
- An eastern division (the Dakota or Isanti/Santee) (in North and South Dakota and Iowa)
- Mdewakantonwan
- Wahpetonwan
- Sisitonwan
- Wahpekute
- A middle division (the Nakota) ( in Montana en Canada)
- Ihanktonwan (Yankton) (The traditionally call themselves Dakota!)
- Ihanktowana (Yanktonai) (The traditionally call themselves Dakota!)
- Nakoda (‘Stone’)
- Assiniboine (The traditionally call themselves Nakoda!)
- Stoney (The traditionally call themselves Nakoda!)
- Nakoda (‘Stone’)
- A western division (the Lakota) (North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana)
- Titonwan (Teton)
- Hunkpapa
- Oglala
- Payabya
- Tapisleca
- Kiyaksa
- Wajaje
- Itesica
- Oyuhpe
- Wagluhe
- Sihasapa (Blackfeet, Blackfoot Sioux)
- Sichangu (Brulé)
- Upper Sichangu
- Lower Sichangu
- Miniconjou
- Itazipacoala (Franch: Sans Arcs "Without Bows")
- Oonhenunpa (Two Kettles)
- Titonwan (Teton)
