Sythetik,
Thanks for the complement on tempura page. I've enjoyed bouncing japanese food pages back and forth between us.
Feel free to edit tempura page with abandon. I did my best, but it really was only a first pass (for me, anyway), after all.

Hello. I have stumbled upon this web site, which may be of your interest, though it is proprietary. Tomos 06:43 Mar 18, 2003 (UTC)

- Tomos, thanks for the link I will use it to cross check my resources. --synthetik 03:51 Mar 19, 2003 (UTC)
Regarding list of cities and counties, Synthetik, if you think the format in Chiba is good, I would like to add such a list to the rest of prefectures in Japan. What do you say? -- Taku 05:50 Mar 22, 2003 (UTC)
- We should have a look at the stuff done on other WikiProjects like Wikipedia:WikiProject Chinese provinces and define a format first. I'm still collecting information about the various prefectures and a lot of the pages have not been created yet. So if you agree we can start something like Wikipedia: WikiProject Japanese prefectures with clear outlines. --synthetik 06:01 Mar 22, 2003 (UTC)

Nice picture of Kobe Port Tower: the page is now infinitely more interesting. No luck with a photo for Osaka on your recent visit? --David Stewart
- Thanks, I have some more pictures from Kobe but the wheater was not that great on my photo-shoot day and I have to check if one of 'em passes the quality test.
- I did not have too much time in Osaka and could only take the sun statue at the expo park in Senri-Chuo. I'll upload it once I get around to it.
- cheers, --synthetik
About wikiproject japanese prefecture. Do you have any decent reason to translate gun as district instead of county? According to recent additions on them, it seems a county is better wording. What do you think? About phots in Kansai. Yeah, it would be nice that if you got pictures. Good luck! -- Taku 01:05 May 6, 2003 (UTC)
- Taku, most of the english versions of the prefectural pages I looked at when coming up with the convention mentioned districts as the sub division between prefectures and municipalities. Hence I choose to use it. District and county are both ambigous terms in the sense that they can mean the same or something totally different depending on the country or the context they are used in. The example stated in the county article does not take into account context sensitivity when it states that district collides with 丁目.
- Take for example:
- "The city of Kyoto has XX districts."
- "Kyoto prefecture is divided into 12 districts."
- I think used properly there is no reason to convert every district to county since it should be perfectly clear within the context to what the district releates. Also I don't want to state edict as the almighty source for Japanese translations, but searching for 丁目 returns:
- Matches in edict:
- 丁目 (ちょうめ) (n) district of a town; city block (of irregular size); (P);

Thanks a lot. I agree with you. I will put this to somehow for further reference. -- Taku 23:08 May 8, 2003 (UTC)
There's a highlighted map for Kyushu but not for Honshu, Shikoku, or Hokkaido, i went to the website you listed, but I cant follow it (being in japanese). Also, i've tried to find a usable picture for Tempura but no luck so far. Its always good to provide the biggest picture possible, and then make a smaller version, rather than simply providing 1 in between (i mainly mean this for .jpgs not pngs).
- The resources I listed in the map are only a reference from where I got the outline for the Japanese prefectures. From there I did a some editing and added the colors. I also uploaded the original gimp file under Wikipedia:WikiProject_Japanese_prefectures/Images just in case someone wants to do their own version or wants to improve the images.
- I'm not quite sure about the tempura pic I can try finding one on the net but usually I only use pics I have shot myself just to make sure the copyright is ok (I know I'm overly paranoid).
- Can you clarify about the picture size ref. you made. Are you refering to images I uploaded or are you asking about how to do proper image processing? cheers, --synthetik 13:56 28 May 2003 (UTC)
Awesome. I thought it odd that the article didn't exist yet, but we've got some gaps in our coverage still so I didn't think much more of it. Koyaanis Qatsi 10:25 11 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- No biggie, I read about the subject a couple of days back and remembered :). --synthetik 10:41 11 Jun 2003 (UTC)
Synth: Maybe it's just because I'm a 'merkin, but I've never heard of anyone leaving "station" uncapitalized in the name of a train station. (I think that even the limeys would say "Victoria Station" and not "Victoria station.") I'm just wondering why you constantly de-capitalize station names and cite "caps abuse," because I wouldn't consider that to be caps abuse. Sekicho 06:10, Dec 19, 2003 (UTC)
