Draft version, 1 June 2016
This is the original and complete version of a list of minor-planet discoverers, as published by the MPC. For the final version, see List of minor planet discoverers. The list serves four specific purposes:
- As a standalone list, displaying all existing discoverers of minor planets (MPs). An external webapp is capable to update this list. The update includes new and obsolete(!) discoverers and the number count of made discoveries.
- As a mapping table, which assigns for each discoverer mentioned at MPC's website the corresponding wikipedia article (or redirect to LOMPD) and its "Discovery by.." category.
- As a base table for redirects. For non-notable discoverers, which have no / (or) a previously deleted article (see § Implemented redirects), a redirect will be made to this list (in analogy to the numerous minor planet articles which were redirected to the list of minor planets). A discoverer's name will then no longer be subject to a potential name conflict with created biographies about non-astronomers, turning the astronomers redlink to a blue link about the wrong person. Examples include Mark Abraham (politician) and Gary P. Emerson (sports). Redirects Mark Abraham (astronomer) and Gary P. Emerson (astronomer) resolve the conflict.
- As a base legend table for the many partial List of minor planets (LOMP). An external web app, that checks the entries in the List of minor planets, can refer to this table to use a consistent name/link/label displayed in the discoverer-column throughout all 450+ pages.
Currently there are many inconsistent namings (especially for redlinks)[LoMP-column discoverers has been revised based on LOMPD]. With this reference table consistency is guaranteed. Corrections, if needed, will only to be made once in the legend, and the webapp will detect a discrepancy in all existing partial LOMPs.
As of 1 November 2016, talk pages have been created for all discoverers of minor planets that redirect to LOMP (see § Talk pages of recently created redirects).
