From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fortress Stockstadt is a former Roman fort situated in Stockstadt am Main in the district of Aschaffenburg in Lower Franconia, a region in the north of Bavaria. Several years of excavations in the early 20th century provided evidence for the existence of a fort complex. These excavations also showed that there were two previous structures in its place which were used only temporarily by occupying Roman forces. This showed that Stocktadt was an important encampment from the beginnings of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes up until its fall in the 3rd century. The site is of archeological importance because of the large amount of stone monuments. These monuments have been found primarily in the Vicus of the castel.
