The foreign policy of the Jimmy Carter administration was characterized by a relatively high emphasis on human rights. Major foreign policy developments during the Carter administration include the Camp David Accords, which helped restore relations between Israel and Egypt, and the Torrijos–Carter Treaties, which returned the Panama Canal Zone to Panama. As part of the ongoing Cold War, the Carter administration provided support to Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet–Afghan War. After the Iranian Revolution, Carter faced the Iranian hostage crisis.
