The city is an independent city (urban district) and one of five major economic centers (Oberzentrum) in the state. It is also the seat of the rural district of Kaiserslautern.
With a population of roughly 99,000 Kaiserslautern is fifth in size among the cities in Rhineland-Palatinate behind Trier, Mainz, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, and Koblenz. Geographically, the closest large cities are Ludwigshafen (about 70km to the east), Mainz (about 80km to the northeast), and Saarbrücken (70km to the west). In addition to 99,033 (as of 2005) Germans there are 48,000 American "Kaiserslauterer" (soldiers, former soldiers, civilian employees, and their families). The Americans work either in Kaiserslautern or at nearby Ramstein Air Base and live either in the city itself or in its suburbs in surrounding Kaiserlautern (district). Kaiserslautern (proper), without the boroughs that were incorporated during various district reforms, has a population of approximately 85,000.
