Jayakarta was a 16th-century port city situated on the northwestern coast of Java. It is best known for its role as the precursor to the modern-day bustling metropolis of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Jayakarta played a significant part in the early history of European colonialism in Southeast Asia. The city was a fief to the Muslim monarchies in Java for most of its history, where it was indirectly controlled by the sultanates of Demak, Cirebon, and later Banten.

The foundation of Jayakarta is commonly attributed to the 16th-century Demak military commander Fatahillah, who led a conquest against the Sundanese Hindu kingdom of Pajajaran and their Portuguese ally in Sunda Kelapa, the conquest was successful and the Portuguese were expelled from Java.
