New York is a state located in the Northeastern United States. According to the 2020 census, New York is the 4th most populous state with 20,201,249 inhabitants and the 27th largest by land area spanning 47,111.3 square miles (122,018 km2) of land and 7,429 square miles (19,240 km2) of water.[1] New York is divided into 62 counties and contains 62 cities and 534 villages. New York is also divided into 932 towns, which are classified by the Census Bureau as minor civil divisions. All of the 534 villages in New York are part of a town. Like a lot of Northeastern states, New York has no unincorporated land; all residents of New York live in either a city, a town or an Indian reservation.
New York City is the most populous city in the state and in all of the United States, with about 44% of the state's residents, and the biggest in land area, spanning 300.3 square miles (778 km2)[2]. The capital and 6th largest city in the state is Albany, New York, with 99,224 inhabitants[3], while Dering Harbor is the least populous, with 50 inhabitants at the time of the 2020 census[4]. The smallest municipality by land area is the village of South Floral Park, with a total area of 0.097 square miles (0.25 km2)[5].
Hempstead is the most populows town in the state, with 793,409 inhabitants at the time of the 2020 census[6]. If Hempstead were to be incorporated as a city, it would be the second largest in New York. The largest town in total area is the town of Brookhaven, spanning 259.645 square miles (672.48 km2) of land and 272.375 square miles (705.45 km2) of water, while Green Island is the smallest, with a total area of 0.933 square miles (2.42 km2)[5].
