The Rechtsstaat Speech (German: Rechtsstaatsrede) was a speech delivered by Philipp Scheidemann to the Reichstag in December of 1916. It was made in response to the controversial Treaty of Stockholm which had been ratified by the Reichstag with a narrow margin earlier in the year, as well as the conduct of the German Army during the war; the information beginning to be revealed by the Opening of Ober Ost played a significant role in the latter.

It is considered the most famous speech of Philipp Scheidemann[1][2]. It was the first direct commentary by a politician in the Reichstag on the situation of Ober Ost during the war, and is widely considered[3][4][5] to be one of the inciting incidents of the 1917 German political crisis and, indirectly, the Postwar Upheaval in Eastern Europe.
