The Qom or Toba people (the word “Toba” is an initially pejorative denomination of guarani origin, but it is of ample use among the Qom themselves, in the self naming of their communities, census and class of the government of Argentina) are an ethnic group from the region known today as the Pampas, that inhabit the Central Chaco. During the 16th century, the Qom began to inhabit a large part of what is today northern Argentina, in the current provinces of Salta, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Formosa and the province of Gran Chaco in the southeast of the Department of Tarija in Bolivia (which the Qom have inhabited since the 20th century. Currently, many, due to persecution in their rural ancestral regions, find themselves in the suburbs of San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, Salta, Tartagal, Resistencia, Charata, Formosa, Rosario and Santa Fe and in Greater Buenos Aires.
Like most indigenous groups from the Pampas region, the Qom are characterized by their height and the prevalence of Dolichocephaly. The Qom consider themselves one of the most important ethnic groups of the Guaicuruans. However, the use of the word Guaicuruan is controversial given that it was originally an insult the guaranis gave to their principle opponents in the Gran Chaco region.
