In architecture, a spire is a long tapering decorative antenna or a conical-like pyramidal pinnacle on the top of a building, most often a skyscraper or a church tower. Etymologically, the word is derived from the Old English word spir, meaning a sprout, shoot, or stalk of grass.[1] In skyscraper architecture, the classification of the mass atop the building as a spire, is set out by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which describes a spire as "a vertical element that completes the architectural expression of the building and is intended as permanent," as opposed to an antenna, described as "a piece of functional-technical equipment that was subject to change."[2]
