Black Madonna of Częstochowa (also Icon of Our Lady of Jasna Góra or Icon of the Black Madonna; in the Eastern tradition, Częstochowa icon of the Mother of God or Czenstochowska icon of the Mother of God; Polish: Czarna Madonna / Matka Boska Częstochowska, lit. 'Black Madonna / Mother of God of Częstochowa'; Latin: Imago thaumaturga Beatae Virginis Mariae Immaculatae Conceptae, in Claro Monte, lit. 'Miraculous Image of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary in Clear Mountain') - is an image representing Mary with the Child in the type of hodegetria[1] (Orthodox icon), located in the most important and most frequented Polish Marian shrine at Jasna Góra in the Chapel of Our Lady under the care of the Pauline Fathers in Częstochowa, of unknown authorship, surrounded by a special religious cult among the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Church believers and considered by them to be miraculous[2]. Today, it is one of Poland's best-recognised symbols of Christianity[3]. Several pontiffs have recognised the venerated icon, beginning with Pope Clement XI, who issued a canonical coronation to the image on 8 September 1717 via the Vatican Chapter. It has also merited three pontifical golden roses to date.
