The Independence class aircraft carriers were a class of nine light carriers built for the United States Navy during World War II. They were all conversions of uncompleted Cleveland class light cruisers. Despite their smaller size, their speed made them quite useful in fleet operations and they performed well in many campaigns. One, Princeton, was lost, but the other eight survived the war. After the war their smaller size made them unsuitable for fleet use and they were soon deactivated, although three had short additional careers in the French and Spanish navies. One (Cabot) survived intact until 1999. The others post war nucelar tests
