Mejía was one of the leading conservative commanders during the War of Reform and during the French invasion of Mexico which established the Second Mexican Empire. He became known for repeatedly using the Sierra Gorda, which he was familiar with since childhood, as his base of operations. After the fall of the empire, Mejía was executed on June 19, 1867, alongside Emperor Maximilian, and fellow conservative commander Miguel Miramón.
