Summary
DescriptionWatford, Five Arches railway viaduct - geograph.org.uk - 71577.jpg |
English: Watford: Five Arches railway viaduct. Well, two of them anyway! This fine five arched viaduct was built to carry the London & Birmingham Railway, now the West Coast Main Line, over the River Colne around 1836. Robert Stephenson was the Chief Engineer. In 1993 a new road, named, not surprisingly, Stephenson Way, linking the M1 motorway with the centre of Watford, was built through two of the other arches. Watford's first swimming pool was built as an offtake from the River Colne here and remained in use until the 1930s when Watford Central Swimming Baths opened. Just visible on the left behind the tree is the base of a Corporation of London Coal Duty obelisk, now sadly defaced by graffiti. This is not its original location but it was meant to indicate the point at which a duty would be levied on coal being brought into London. |
