English: Detail of a French map of Italy from c. 1700–1750 showing the territory of the Republic of Lucca. The enclave of Pietrasanta (in brown) surrounded by Lucca belonged to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The Republic of Lucca was bordered to the northwest by the Duchy of Massa-Carrara, to the north by the Duchy of Modena, and to the east and south by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The map was designed by Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) and published after his death by Covens & Mortier. |
