English: Portnall Park. The seat of Colonel Bisse Challoner. To whom this View is most respectfully inscribed by his most obedient Servant, G. F. Prosser. |
Description |
English: Portnall Park, an estate at Virginia Water, Surrey, England, UK, "... three miles distant from Egham and twenty-one from London", which was once owned by, among others, Colonel Thomas-Chaloner Bisse-Challoner. Also known as Portenhall, Potnalls or Potenhall, it was a manor within a manor that passed from John Jebb, D.D. (died 1787), Dean of Cashel, to his younger son David (brother of John). David Jebb exchanged part of the property with some land in Egham with the Rev. Thomas Bisse, c. 1795. Mr. Bisse demolished the remains of ancient mansion and put up a new one which devolved on his death to his son in 1828. The son added more. The house and four-hundred acre park were sold by Col. Challoner's nephew by marriage to Walter George Tarrant in the 1920s and thus it was subsumed into the Wentworth Estate. |
