Nederlands: Het raderstoomschip Soembing. Kapitein-ter-zee Gerhardus Fabius is gestuurd door de Nederlandse regering om de Japanners in te wijden in zeevaarttechnieken. Hij gebruikt de Soembing om praktijklessen te geven in de baai van Nagasaki. Op 5 oktober 1855 schenkt het opperhoofd van Deshima, Jan Hendrik Donker Curtius, de Soembing namens Koning Willem III aan de Japanse regering. Het schip wordt omgedoopt tot Kanko Maru.
English: The paddle steamer Soembing. Captain Gerhardus Fabius was sent to Japan by the Dutch government to educate them in the modern art of navigation. October 5t, 1855 commissioner Jan Hendrik Donker Curtius of Dejima hands the Soembing over to the Japanese government on behalf of king Willem III. The ship is renamed Kanko Maru. |
