DescriptionMembers of no religious organizations in Iceland.svg | The graph shows members of no religious organizations in Iceland as a function of time. The numbers are percentages of the total population of Iceland. The jump in 1996 can be explained with a scandal in the National Church involving the bishop. A registration campaign by the atheist activist group Vantrú modestly helps to explain the rise in the last few years. I don't know the cause of the large decline between 1950 and 1960 - one might suspect some sort of methodological artifact but that's not apparent in the data (the 1960 census is exceptionally thorough and detailed but it's hard to see anything in previous census publications which would systematically overrepresent this group). There are some issues of interpretations for the 19th century data; there are 3 people "uden opgiven Trosbekjendelse" in 1880 but even including them the percentage is 0.00. In the 1890 data there are "12 Fritænkere" and "3 uden opgiven Trosbekjendelse". The percentage is 0.02 whether the latter group is included or not. Religious freedom was granted in 1874, in census data before that no-one is registered as outside religious organizations. | |||

Graph created in Gnuplot. Data originates from Statistics Iceland as published online for the period of 1990 and later (http://statice.is/Statistics/Population/Religious-organizations) and as published in the periodical Hagtíðindi for the years 1964, 1973, 1974 and 1975-1989 (data for 1964 published in 1966 - data for later years usually published the year after it is collected). Older data is census data from Manntal á Íslandi and Folketællingen paa Island, specifically:
