Summary
DescriptionInside Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton-by-Peter-Craine.jpg | Inside Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton. This fort was built around 1826 as a response to the threat of French invasion. In World War II, the battery commander claims to have fired the first British shots of the war fifteen minutes after the declaration, although I'm not sure of the circumstances of this. The fort was cleverly camouflaged during the war by painting the entire surface grass green and painting "Teas" in large letters to make it look like a tea garden to bombers. Nowadays, it is a tourist attraction with several military and Elvis/ Beatles displays. It also hosts various musical events. |
