Description |
HMS ‘Nemesis’ and boats attacking a masked Battery, 23 February 1841 (First Opium War) On 23 February 1841, Nemesis in consort with pinnaces from the British ships Calliope, Samarang, Herald, and Alligator, proceeded to Anson's Bay where the Chinese had been observed making hostile preparations by placing stakes across the river. The stakes can be seen in the painting between the background junks and Nemesis. As Nemesis slowed to pull up the stakes and create a passage, a masked battery close abreast on shore opened fire. |
