Summary
DescriptionEmmanuelEpiscopalPittsburgh.jpg | Richardson designed this church with simple elemental forms - including what amounts to a round apse the full width of the building. Locally it is known as the "bakeoven church" because of this shape. The simplicity was somewhat imposed by the congregation on Richardson - his first design, a lantern church, was beyond their budget. That design was later reworked for the rather ugly Immanuel Episcopal Baptist Church in Newton, MA. It was further reworked by Richardson's successor firm - Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge - into the rather beautiful Shadyside Presbyterian Church, several miles to the southeast of this building. |
