Summary
DescriptionEdwardStafford 2ndEarlOfWiltshire (d.1499) LowickChurch Northamptonshire.png |
English: Edward Stafford, 2nd Earl of Wiltshire (d.1499), of Drayton, Lowick, Northants, in Lowick Church. The arms on the sinister side of his tunic are not those of his wife (Margaret Grey, the daughter of Edward Grey, Viscount Lisle, by Elizabeth Talbot, suo jure Baroness Lisle of Kingston Lisle), as might be expected. His relative GREEN, Ralph (c.1379-1417), MP, of Drayton, Northants and Sir John Dallingridge, MP, appeared before the King’s tent to obtain a final settlement of their dispute over the right to bear arms ‘d’argent ove une croice engreilé de gules’. Dallingridge impulsively offered single combat to decide the issue ‘sauns pluis estre delaié’; but Green, who seems to have been rather more cautious, wanted Henry IV himself to make an award. Intent upon keeping the peace among his retainers, Henry decreed that both should bear the coat of arms until the case could receive a proper hearing before the constable and marshal of England.
