Nederlands: Dr. Albert Schweitzer stichtte in 1913 een ziekenhuis in Lambarené (Gabon) op het terrein van het Parijse zendingsgenootschap, gelegen aan de oever van de Ogowe rivier. De bamboehutten en raffiabladerdaken van het oude ziekenhuis eisten een voortdurend onderhoud. Na elke tornado moesten gaten in de daken worden gedicht en elke twee of drie jaar moest een dak opnieuw gedekt worden. Vaak kon de arts zich 's ochtends alleen aan de patiënten wijden, omdat hij 's middags gebouwen moest herstellen. Wegens het gebrek aan ruimte besloot Schweitzer in 1925 een nieuw ziekenhuis te bouwen, 3 kilometer stroomopwaarts van het oude ziekenhuis. De gebouwen van het nieuwe ziekenhuis werden gebouwd met daken van golfplaten. In 1927 waren voldoende gebouwen van het nieuwe ziekenhuis gereed, zodat de zieken konden worden overgebracht. De barakken van het oude ziekenhuis werden ontruimd, waarna het materiaal kon worden gebruikt om het nieuwe ziekenhuis af te werken. |
