English: Chinese contract labourers from Shantou (China) leaving the boat 's Jacob in Belawan for working on the tobacco plantations, Sumatra.
Nederlands: Negatief. Belawan was niet alleen de afscheephaven van Deli's exportproducten, maar ook de haven waar de van buiten gekomen arbeidskrachten ontscheept werden. De plantages hadden namelijk van het begin af aan te kampen met een tekort aan arbeidskrachten. De lokale bevolking was niet van plan was op de plantages te komen werken, behalve incidenteel, bijvoorbeeld voor het bouwen van een loods. In het begin waren het vooral Chinese arbeiders uit de dichtbij gelegen plaatsen Singapore en Penang. Later ging men ook arbeiders in China werven. Daarnaast kwam de werving van Javaanse arbeiders en arbeidsters op gang. Vanaf het begin van de 20e eeuw zouden de Javanen de Chinezen in aantal overtreffen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
