The Chikuhō coalfield (筑豊炭田) is located on Kyushu Island, Japan. With the promotion of industrial development and the establishment of the Yawata Steel Works, zaibatsu companies and major capital investment led to rapid development of coal mines and the area produced more than half of the nation's coal, making it the largest coal field in Japan before World War II.
