Iga Świątek defeated defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in a rematch of the previous year's final, 7–5, 4–6, 7–6(9–7) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2024 Madrid Open.[1] She saved three championship points en route to her ninth WTA 1000 and 20th career WTA Tour title.[2] By winning the title, Świątek completed a career sweep of all the European clay court events at WTA 500 level and above; she was just the second woman, after Maria Sharapova, to achieve this feat.[citation needed]
