the vivid and powerful painting of TURGO BASTIEN glow with an inner spiritual luminosity, depicting the artist's fascination with searching for and revealing the light in the ultimate darkness and the truth and nobility that is present in even the humblest of subjects.his works have been exhibited and drawn critical acclaim internationally for their imagery,a formal vocabulary he has developed that combines totemic afro-caribbean symbols with a striking modern sensibility that useds the rhythms and colors of native Haiti to epress a truly poetic cosmological reality. he combines personalizes and refines these juxtapositions with a deft sophistication that shows mastery of his medium and his striking contemporary iconography.
Born in Haiti schooling at the Lycee Toussaint L'Ouverture. his artistic education was informal, and began with a childhood love of drawing. He was a self-taught painter in his teens, when he found employment and expanded his techniques as a commercial artist for several years.Known primarily for his paintings in acrylic,he has also acquired skill as a sculptor, using found objects-aluminum,wood,scrap metals and natural fibers-to further explore and explain his vision.
for the 20 years, Bastien has maintaind homes and actively works in studios in Jacmel, Haiti Nassau, Bahamas, and West Palm Beach,Florida, while producing a significant body of art that is testimony, at mid-career,to the importance of his work for its epressiveness, sophistication, and firm grounding in the intertional art dialogue. He is also the founder of Art Creation Foundation, an art school for children that he started and still supports in his native Haiti. His pieces have been exhibited in Museums and galleries world-wide, and have been reviewed in several books and publications,Here...There and beyond, The bahamas Journal,The Miami Herald, The 303 Magazine,The Denver Post, and Haitian Art in the Diaspora.
